The Wayne Sleep Dance Scholarship

I would like to tell you how the Scholarship came about. Around the time of Princess Diana’s funeral I gave many interviews to say what she had meant to us all in her support of dance and her passion for it. As time went by, and although I felt that I had said everything there was to say, insistent requests for even more interviews kept coming from the media. I declined. Then they said that they would pay. That gave me the idea of starting a Scholarship fund to enable dancers to further their training.

How the fund was launched

On the 19 July 1998, The Wayne Sleep Dance Scholarship was launched at a gala evening at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London to celebrate Wayne’s fiftieth birthday. The Charity was formally registered on 15 July 1998, its aim being to raise funds to provide Scholarships for talented students to further their training in all aspects of theatre and dance.

To date money has come from performances that Wayne has both directed and appeared in, from patrons and donations from kind people who care about the future of gifted youngsters in this country. Awards have already been given to budding artists, but to endow more full scholarships we need to raise the necessary capital. Contributions will be most gratefully received and will go towards making a dream come true.
