Wayne (right) on location with Cate Blanchett during the filming of Elizabeth. The cast of Elizabeth included Sir John Gielgud, Sir Richard Attenborough, Christopher Eccleston and Joseph Fiennes, along with cameos by Wayne and ex-footballer Eric Cantona.

The film, nominated for eight Oscar categories, including Best Film and Best Actress for Cate's portrayal of the Virgin Queen, won an Oscar for Best Make Up. Elizabeth also won six Baftas including Best Film.
